The Yacht Captain 499 GT certificate of competency authorises the holder to command commercial yachts of less than 500 GT. Holders may serve as captains on commercial and private yachts. Our course covers navigation, meteorology, seamanship, basic maritime safety, maritime law and boat engines, and includes 24 hours of practical sailing, powered manoeuvring and navigation on board a boat.

About the Training

The Yacht Captain 499 GT certificate of competency authorises the holder to command commercial yachts of less than 500 GT. Holders may serve as captains on commercial and private yachts. Our course covers navigation, meteorology, seamanship, basic maritime safety, maritime law and boat engines, and includes 24 hours of practical sailing, powered manoeuvring and navigation on board a boat.

Who can attend the course?

Provided applicants have reached the age of 18, are high school graduates and are medically fit to serve as yacht captains,

1. They must hold a 149 GT yacht captain certificate and have at least 12 months of sea service on vessels meeting the Administration's specified criteria, or...

2. Those with at least 6 months of sea service as a boatswain, or those promoted from able seafarer deck to boatswain, may attend the course.

A - Seafarers holding restricted master, officer of the watch or oceangoing officer of the watch certificates may, upon request, receive a 499 GT yacht captain certificate, exempt from the training and examinations specified in this article, provided they document 1 year of sea service in their current capacity and rank and their competency is not subject to any code restriction relating to English language proficiency.

B - Deck seafarers holding chief mate or master certificates may, upon request, receive a yacht captain (499 GT) certificate, exempt from the training and examinations specified in this article, provided their competency is not subject to any code restriction relating to English language proficiency.

The STCW Basic Maritime Safety certificates required for yacht captains are provided within the duration and facilities of our course.

How long is the course?

The training consists of 296 hours of theory and 24 hours of practical training, lasting a total of 320 hours over 40 working days.
